The formal four square garden has plants that were indigenous to the United States or would have been brought
here by the 1700s. Lined with American Boxwood, the brick pathways are Jeffersonian by design.
The Cottage Garden, octagonal in design, is filled with medicinal and culinary herbs, dye plants and ornamentals.
The center area is filled with oyster shells dug while planting the gardens. Oysters brought up the Susquehanna River
were a staple on the Colonial Tavern menu. After serving the shells were tossed out the back door where they remained
for 200 years.
